The California Human Rights Amendment
What is the California Human Rights Amendment? (CHRA)
The CHRA is an initiative that will amend the California Constitution and define personhood commencing at biological beginning.
Who would be protected by the California Human Rights Amendment?
All human beings, from their biological beginning to natural death deserve to be protected by law. That
means babies in the womb, frozen embryos in laboratories, children, adults, the disabled, the dying, and
those dependent on feeding tubes and other medical support. All are persons, and therefore due equal
protection under the law.
The language of the California Human Rights Amendment is as follows.
Section 2 Article 1 Section 7(c) is added to the California Constitution to read:
"The term ‘person’ applies to all living human organisms from the beginning of their biological development, regardless of the means by which they were procreated, method of reproduction, age, race, sex, gender, physical well-being, function, or condition of physical or mental dependency and/or disability”.
Why do we need this amendment?
1. The right to life is the paramount and most fundamental right of a person.
2. Modern medical science clearly and overwhelmingly supports “personhood”, the fact that human life
begins at biological development.
3. Personhood removes the politically charged rhetoric of the “life” debate and replaces it with the commonsense scientific principle that life begins at each human being's biological beginning.
4. Personhood is unlike all other legislation in that it guarantees the right to life of ALL people from the
moment of procreation until natural death.
5. ALL human beings deserve to be protected by love and by law. Personhood is Human Rights.
What can you do?
In Mid-November 2009 (anticipated November 19) the Attorney General will provide “Title and Summary”
for the CHRA.
We will then have 5 months until mid April 2010 to collect 1.2 million petition signatures in
California in order to qualify for the November 2010 election. Please begin now….
- Educate your family, friends and email base about this important initiative.
- Plan to collect at least 20 signatures from California registered voters who want to support this important initiative.
- Encourage your friends to collect signatures also – outside busy stores, at work, in high traffic areas.
- Motivate your church/club/organization to participate by educating members and collecting signatures after meetings.
- Once Title and Summary is received, you will be given petitions for collecting signatures (and download information).
